WRITING

July 18, 2020 – A Bart Dilemma

Bart FlanaganBart and his magical gifts have been a challenge…until now!

The deadline for Book Two is barrelling down on me (August 15th), so I’m busily writing and editing. The completed manuscript for The Kidnapping King is only about a third complete. So, I’m sweating! There’s still so much to write in the next three weeks! And adding to the pressure is the fact that we’ve decided to relinquish our commercial workshop space, since we’re doing most of our work from home these days, anyhow. We’ve got to be moved out by the end of this month.

When it rains, it pours. LOL!

One of the roadblocks I’ve been struggling with, in the book, has to do with Bart.

For those of you familiar with the story, you know that Bart’s dad, Bill Flanagan, revealed that Bart has magical abilities. And like Jack, those gifts are lying dormant in his body until he reaches puberty. But we don’t know what those powers will be, yet.

I’ve been struggling with a situation Bart finds himself in, wanting to write in a scene where his wizarding gifts reveal themselves. I want to do it in a fun and surprising way. And his abilities mustn’t be the same as, but rather complement, Jack’s (those familiar with World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs – think party or guild members who possess complementary crafting skills.) For instance, when considering the three traditional types of magic; Arcane, Mental, and Elemental, optimally, we want a balance of the three so that they enhance one another and bring different talents to the table.

Thanks to my oldest son, Trent, who planted the seed of Bart’s magic in my brain. And now I’m excitedly composing the scene! If you’d like to read along, I’m posting (rough draft) chapters as I’m writing them. You can READ THOSE FOR FREE HERE.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas about the book so far! Please leave comments below, share with me privately on my CONTACT page, or hit me up on my FACEBOOK page.
