Will I see any benefit from adopting a carnivore diet? I decided to give it a try and find out for myself. I was eating a whole-food, plant-based diet for several months (off and on for y-e-a-r-s!) but that wasn’t working for me. So, I decided to pull out all the stops and try this all-animal (no dairy for me) approach. Why the dramatic shift in my diet and lifestyle? Many people would probably assume I was eating a plant-based diet for ethical reasons. Not so. I’m concerned about my own health, first and foremost. And, for me, diet isn’t a religion. More about that here. Of course, I care about animals. Both from an ethical as well as dietary quality perspectives. But that bird out in my yard has no qualms about pecking that living worm out of my yard for his supper. Nor do any number of other species on this planet who eat other living beings in order to survive and thrive. (Don’t even get me started on how many MORE life forms are killed through agriculture than via the conventional meat industry. Do your own research on the matter.) Bottom line, for me, is I want to achieve optimal health. And I have some stubborn weight to lose. So, the carnivore diet I was first introduced to the idea (like almost everyone else) by watching Joe Rogan’s Interview with Dr. Shawn Baker. And that got me thinking. Then I learned about the success Jordan Peterson and his daughter, Mikhaila, were having following a carnivore diet, again, watching Joe Rogan’s interviews with them. (I hadn’t realized the impact Joe Rogan has had on my personal life until this very moment, lol!) and I thought about it some more. But I still wasn’t convinced to try it myself. Then one of my best girlfriends decided to try the carnivore diet… And she became an evangelist. She was constantly telling me why she was so passionate about this lifestyle and why she believes it is the holy grail of diets for the human species. And I still wasn’t convinced. In fact, I flat out resisted. But over time, as my body continued to struggle to lose weight, and I started having little health concerns pop up (insomnia, skin problems, concerns about possible high blood pressure and insulin resistance), I decided to give the carnivore diet a shot. Hell, I’d water-fasted for 7 days straight. This couldn’t be nearly that extreme. And I share my experience in the video above. I’d love to hear about your experience if you’ve also given the animals-only diet a try. Please leave your comments below. Enjoy!
FREEZE SLEEVE is a unique product I just learned about last month. As a grandparent with grand kids in gymnastics, martial arts and other sports, as well as someone who has suffered with joint pain, off and on, over the years, this product really caught my attention! Mike and Robbin, the owners and designers of the FREEZE SLEEVE, have four children who are all active and participate in multiple competitive sports. All four kids had their share of injuries over the years (as all kids do!), but the youngest of the bunch “Lizzie” could not stay at 100%. She is a competitive gymnast who trains up to 25 hours a week. After multiple broken bones, fractures, pains and strains… her little body was a wreck. The story goes that one day she came home from practice crying of both elbow and knee pain. Mike and Robbin’s immediate reaction was to tell her they needed to take her out of gymnastics and find another sport. But when their daughter replied, with tears streaming down her face, “But Dad, I LOVE gymnastics!” They knew they had to find a better solution. Mike had personally used ice and compression for years as a recovery tool after his daily workouts, so he decided to do some research to see if there was anything out there for her. After countless hours of searching on the internet, and purchasing multiple products to try, he was ready to give up. Nothing fit her little body and on top of that, he found that trying to keep her still for 15 minutes to ice every night was nearly impossible. Mike knew there had to be a better way. After seeing an infomercial late one night for compression sleeves… he had that “ah ha” moment. He wondered if they could actually make a product that delivered cold therapy in a comfortable, easy to use compression sleeve that was child friendly, non toxic and leak proof? That’s exactly what they did! And the concept has taken off! Now they not only have FREEZE SLEEVES in children’s sizes, they offer them for adults, too. And they come in lots of vibrant colors so that they can be stylish as well as functional! I decided to became an affiliate so that I could share their amazing products with others who need something just like this! Keto Bone Broth from Kettle & Fire. Delicious, Nutritious, Organic, Affordable. Bone broth is something my daughter, Rachel, has never tried before. So, I asked her to join me for a review of 6 flavors of Kettle & Fire’s quality broths and soups. Flavors we sampled include: Beef – Marrow bones from pasture-raised, 100% grass-fed & finished cattle. This broth contains collagen, a protein many say they haven’t been getting enough of from other foods. It also contains amino acids such as glycine and proline. Chicken – Organic, pasture-raised chicken bones are slow simmered with organic herbs and vegetables. This broth contains collagen, amino acids and compounds such as glucosamine, glycine, proline, and chondroitin. Coconut Curry and Lime Chicken – Organic, pasture-raised chicken bones, slow-simmered with organic coconut milk & organic lime juice. Coconut Curry & Lime Chicken broth is an incredibly tasty fusion of sweet and savory, born from Kettle & Fire’s original chicken bone broth recipe. Mushroom Chicken – Organic, pasture raised chicken bones, slow simmered with organic portabella and lion’s mane mushrooms. We also sampled two of their keto soups: Mushroom Bisque – Keto Mushroom Soup Made With Chicken Bone Broth has only 2 Net Carbs. Broccoli Cheddar – Keto Broccoli Cheddar Soup Made With Chicken Bone Broth has only 3 Net Carbs. And at right around $4.00 per serving, this is high-quality nutrition at a very affordable price. And it’s MUCH more convenient than making it yourself! The flavors are all excellent! And unlike my own, home-made bone broth, these haven’t got even a hint or whiff of that “wet dog” smell or flavor that I get from the stuff I make in my Instant Pot. Watch the video above for our detailed tasting and then purchase some Kettle & Fire Bone Broth for yourself! I’m pretty sure you’ll be hooked! It’s real, it’s delicious and it’s for your enjoyment. Look for limited edition SPAM® Pumpkin Spice 2-packs coming Sept. 23rd to SPAM.com and Walmart.com. Eat one, save one! That’s what Hormel’s Website says about this new, limited-edition product they are introducing at the end of this month. Seriously??? I really detest the original…but I DO love me some pumpkin spice, lol! Egads! Might I actually have to try this? Ummm…no. I really can’t even stomach the idea!!! 😉 But I will admit that I think it sounds better than the original. Which, to me, equates to WAY over-salted, junk meat-bi-product leftovers (in World of Warcraft terms…this is what the creators had in mind when they came up with the term Mystery Meat, lol!) That’s it. Spam is Mystery Meat. And I don’t eat that stuff. I don’t eat “Sweet Breads”, either. By the way…who came up with that name for brains in Jello? I mean, really. That is just a sick, sick joke, in my opinion. Because…I actually LOVE sweet-bread. You know, like…zucchini bread, banana bread, PUMPKIN SPICE bread, for heaven’s sake! LOL! So, I think this was just some jerk trying to get kids to eat the animal scraps. Who do they think they’re kidding, anyway? A-hem. I digress! So, the Pumpkin Spice Spam. I had to at least search on the nutritional facts, for those who might actually be interested in trying the stuff. According to their website, Hormel provides the following product details: Ingredients: Pork with Ham, Sugar, Water, Salt, Modified Potato Starch, Spices, Sodium Nitrite. Nutrition facts: Serving Size: 2 oz (56g); Servings: 6 Calories: 180 ; Total Fat: 16g (21%); Saturated Fat: 6g (30%); Cholesterol: 40mg (13%); Sodium: 600mg (26%); Total Carbohydrates: 3g (1%); Dietary Fiber: 0g (0%); Sugars: 3g (6%); Protein: 7g ; The ingredients alone make this food a no-go for me. Whether following a keto diet or a whole foods plant based eating plan…either way, this stuff doesn’t in any way fit my criteria for something I want to be including in my daily calorie consumption. But if ya’ll want to give it a try…by all means LET ME KNOW what you think down below! I am genuinely interested to hear what people think of this product! By the way…as far as attribution is concerned… *I originally found out about this product at NBC News. Here’s the link to their full article All the best, ~Tracy
Now, here’s something we all need for Halloween…like a hole in the head, lol! *Thanks to delish.com’s Editorial Fellow, Megan Schaltegger, for this entertaining and delightful post making me aware of the trendy new cup! But seriously, I’m a huge Starbucks fan a-n-d Fall is my absolute favorite season of the year! So, ya, I’m happy to start thinking about preparing for Halloween and the upcoming autumn months! BRACE YOURSELF! There WILL be alot of seasonally-themed posts for Halloween and the cooler weather forthcoming! But, for now, I thought I’d wander over to the Starbucks website to discover exactly what kind of beverages an autumn-loving person might order up to satisfy that sweet and spicy, fragrant experience craving they might be having! And here’s what I found… Pumpkin Spice Latte – a hot drink and Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino® Blended Beverage – served cold. They both look amazingly delicious! So, ever the researcher that I am…I clicked on through to the page for each drink to learn more about the nutritional values. And WOW! The calories and carb content are CRAZY high! So, as much as I’d love to indulge…maybe one time for Halloween only, lol…I have to wonder if these libations could be ordered as a more “healthy” version of the originals? Fortunately, I have access to secret-insider-information! My daughter worked as a barista at Starbucks for…like…8 years or something, lol! She had some great suggestions for substitutions that I wasn’t sure of. HERE’S WHAT WE’RE WORKING WITH These are the default nutrition stats from the Starbucks website – (The first is for the Pumpkin Spice Latte and the second is for the Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino) Pumpkin Spice Latte – Described on their website as “Our signature espresso and steamed milk with the celebrated flavor combination of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Enjoy it topped with whipped cream and real pumpkin pie spices.” YUM! Here are my healthier-version suggestions: VEGAN/WFPB – Starbucks is really great about supporting plant-based options instead of the traditional cow’s milk dairy. So, you can order this drink skipping the whipped cream on top and replacing the default 2% milk with your choice of; almond, coconut or soy milk and really save on calories! However…the signature pumpkin flavor in this drink comes from their special Pumpkin Spice Sauce…which, unfortunately, contains Condensed Skim Milk. So, there is no way around that. My best recommendation is to order a Cafe’ Latte with steamed non-dairy milk of choice, then have them add a few pumps of flavoring syrup – mix & match from; vanilla (available sugar-free) caramel (available sugar-free) cinnamon dolce (available sugar-free) hazelnut (available sugar-free) toffee nut Then have them add their Pumpkin Spice Topping and VOILA! A much healthier version (if you choose sugar-free syrups then your total calories for this beverage would be; almond milk = 100 cal./6g fat, coconut milk = 140 cal./8g fat, and soy milk = 190 cal./6g fat) than the above and hopefully just about as tasty! A great Halloween beverage!…
MY AMAZING MARY’S MINI RESULTS I gotta tell you…after 10 days on the Mary’s Mini version of Dr. John McDougall’s Starch Solution I was pretty happy with my results! Not only did I lose weight, but I’m also noticing some other health conditions improving in that short time. Yes, I lost 5 pounds in 10 days…which is incredible…but I also noticed my skin looking better and my energy improving! Honestly, I’m not completely sure if my success was 100% due to the Mary’s Mini diet…or if the Intermittent Fasting/OMAD (One Meal A Day) approach was what made the difference. HERE’S MY MARY’S MINI BREAKDOWN The first 8 days I followed the standard Mary’s Mini protocol, ie; I ate regular meals, as I would normally, but made sure to eat only foods approved for this program. You are supposed to choose a single type of ‘starchy’ food (potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, quinoa, oatmeal, etc.) and make that the center of every meal. I chose potatoes. Granted, I did include some yams and sweet potatoes, too. I figured they are all (essentially) potatoes…even though the orange ones I thought were yams are probably just a different variety of sweet potato. But by day 8 I hadn’t achieved the kind of weight-loss goals I’d hoped for. So, the last 2 days I decided to incorporate an OMAD approach, skipping breakfast and lunch, only eating a single evening meal AND THAT MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE Watch the video below for all the details then tell me your own thoughts in the comments below. I’d love to know if you’ve tried either Mary’s Mini and/or OMAD, and if so, what your experience has been! And if you want to learn more about the first 8 days of my 10 day challenge, then CLICK HERE Please comment below and let me know what you think! Until Next Time… I wish you good health, Tracy
I’ve been following the 10-Day Mary’s Mini version of Dr. John McDougall’s The Starch Solution weight-loss plan, and today is Day 8. These are my thoughts and experience so far. I talk, in detail, about the differences between the two plans and why I’m choosing to try the Mary’s Mini version instead of the basic plan. Basically, for either plan you make starch the center of every meal you eat. The biggest difference is that on the basic plan, you can mix up a variety of starches without restriction. However, if you aren’t having weight-loss success, Mrs. McDougall, Mary, developed a scaled-back version where you choose just one starch and make that your primary food for the duration of the 10-day program. For my starch I chose potatoes. And surprisingly, I didn’t get tired of them, at all, over the full 10 days. I found a variety of ways to eat them to keep things interesting, and I supplemented with other non-starchy vegetables and some fruits. In the video I share why I think I don’t normally lose weight following The Starch Solution, and how I’ve changed my mindset for weight-loss expectations. Also touched on in this video are my thoughts on keto vs low-fat, plant-based diets, and their implications for longevity based on archaeological evidence, and why I feel that diet isn’t religion and each person must choose for themselves, what to eat. This decision must be based on their own personal experience with how different foods make them feel, and the results achieved when they follow different diets and lifestyle programs. Have you ever tried The Starch Solution or Mary’s Mini? I’d love to hear about your experience. Is it just me who has a challenge losing weight eating mainly starches? This is a short, time-lapse video clip of me working on burning a Vikings piece based on the Netflix series by the same name. I’m Swedish on my mother’s side so, have always felt a real connection with that Norse ancestry. I really loved this series…watched the entire thing all the way through, twice, lol! So, this piece is a “just for fun” project for me! Below you’ll find an update video depicting the progress I’m making on the Vikings piece. It’s still a work-in-progress. I like to keep several of my own in various stages of completion so that I have something to work on when I’m not busy with a client project. If you like this piece, you’ll probably also like my Harry Potter piece here. Time-lapse is so awesome…this 60 second video represents about 2 hours of burn time.
